Philips iU22 (family)
Philips's premium cart-based ultrasound family from the mid-2000s through mid-2010s. Widely deployed in radiology general imaging, OB / GYN, vascular, and breast practice. Succeeded by the EPIQ family (EPIQ 5, 7, Elite). The iU22 remains one of the most widely refurbished ultrasound platforms globally — large installed base, mature parts ecosystem, and probe portfolio that retains substantial standalone value.
History
- 2004 — iU22 launches with PureWave single-crystal transducer technology.
- Late 2000s — xMATRIX matrix-array generation adds live 3D / 4D cardiac imaging.
- Mid 2010s — EPIQ 5 / 7 succeed iU22 as Philips's premium platform.
- Continued service life — iU22 remains in active clinical use globally; refurb economics favor it as a value-tier premium platform.
Variants
- iU22 original — launch configuration.
- iU22 xMATRIX — refresh adding xMATRIX matrix-array transducers for live 3D / 4D.
Shared platform characteristics
- Cart-based premium general imaging platform — full radiology / OB / vascular / cardiac scope.
- Broad transducer lineup: curved, linear, phased, TEE, endovaginal, endorectal, 3D / 4D matrix.
- SonoCT compound imaging + XRES speckle reduction — image-quality differentiators at premium tier.
- PureWave single-crystal probes ship across the line.
- Multi-port probe-port architecture — typically 3–4 active ports for rapid swapping.
Parts (transducers)
Probes are the single largest service / capital concern on an iU22 cart — individual probe value can approach or exceed the cart itself on the refurb market. System Cards exist for the following transducers:
- C5-1 PureWave curved abdominal / OB
- C8-5 endocavity / small-parts curved
- C10-3v endovaginal / endocavity
- L12-5 vascular / small-parts linear
- S5-1 adult cardiac PureWave sector
- X6-1 xMATRIX volumetric adult cardiac
Distinctive technology
- PureWave single-crystal transducers — improved penetration on heavy-habitus patients vs conventional polycrystalline-ceramic probes.
- xMATRIX matrix-array (X6-1) — enables live 3D / 4D cardiac imaging electronically without mechanical scanheads.
- SonoCT + XRES — compound imaging plus speckle reduction; image-quality stack that ages well clinically.
Successor
- Philips EPIQ Elite — current premium tier; succeeded iU22 mid-2010s.
- Philips EPIQ CVx — cardiac-specialized successor.
Refurb posture
- One of the most widely refurbished ultrasound platforms globally — large installed base, mature parts.
- Probe inventory drives value — a fully-loaded iU22 with PureWave + xMATRIX probes can carry meaningful refurb premium.
- Software / license version affects analytics-package availability.
- iU22 xMATRIX vs original — xMATRIX-capable chassis required for X6-1 live-4D cardiac. Confirm chassis tier before sourcing matrix probes.
