PureWave
Philips's single-crystal ultrasound transducer technology. Replaces the conventional polycrystalline-ceramic piezoelectric stack with a homogeneous single crystal of relaxor-ferroelectric material — higher bandwidth, better acoustic efficiency, and improved penetration on technically difficult patients. Equivalent technology exists across the Big Three vendors under different brand names; PureWave is the Philips-specific naming.
Why it matters to buyers: PureWave probes (C5-1, C8-5, X6-1 xMATRIX, others) ship with iU22 and EPIQ. Image-quality differentiator at refurb purchase — particularly meaningful on heavy-habitus patients where conventional probes lose penetration. The probe portfolio is a meaningful share of total cart value.
Why it matters to engineers: Backward-compatible with iU22 / iE33 ports. X6-1 matrix array requires xMATRIX-capable chassis — earlier iU22 generations don't support it. Probe-refurbishment programs return PureWave probes to factory spec at substantial cost savings versus replacement.
