glossaryUltrasound

matrix array

Ultrasound transducer with a 2D grid of elements — enables electronic volumetric (3D / 4D) beam steering without mechanical scanheads. Replaces the legacy mechanical-3D probe with electronic-only acquisition, dramatically improving 4D frame rate and reliability.

Why it matters to buyers: Defines live 3D / 4D cardiac capability. Philips X6-1 (xMATRIX) is the iconic example; TEE matrix probes for cardiac. Mandatory for modern advanced echo workflows.

Why it matters to engineers: High element counts (thousands of elements per probe); highest-cost probes in any fleet. Refurbishment is favorable economics on damaged matrix probes versus replacement.
