GE LightSpeed VCT (base)
Family: LightSpeed · Modality: CT
Variant siblings: VCT XT · VCT Select
The original 2004 LightSpeed VCT configuration. First 64-slice scanner widely deployed across US hospitals and the platform that established GE's 64-slice market position for the remainder of the decade. Entry tier in today's VCT market: pre-V-Res detector, 0.5 s minimum rotation, no ASiR, no Volume Shuttle, no cardiac gating license by default.
Original 2004 configuration
- 64 slices — a major generational step in 2004, when 16-slice scanners were still the clinical standard.
- 70 cm gantry aperture — wide-bore by mid-2000s standards; Siemens Sensation 16 / 64 and Philips Brilliance 64 of the era ran narrower apertures.
- Performix Pro VCT 100 tube — the tube that would define the entire VCT family and remain the dominant wear item through XT years.
- Pre-V-Res detector — original VDAS generation, coarser Z-axis than the later V-Res 40 mm detector on VCT XT.
- Host software 4.x — many base units ran their full life on 4.x; some late-production base units shipped with 5.x early builds.
What base does not include
- No ASiR — filtered back-projection reconstruction only. Dose reduction relies on operator technique, not iterative reconstruction.
- No Volume Shuttle — perfusion protocols that depend on 40 mm Z-axis + bidirectional table motion are not supported.
- No SnapShot Pulse by default — cardiac gating was rare on base units.
- Slower rotation — 0.5 s minimum.
Specs
- 64 slices · 70 cm gantry aperture
- Pre-V-Res detector
- Performix Pro VCT 100 tube · 8.0 MHU heat capacity
- 100 kW high-frequency generator
- 0.5 s minimum rotation
- Host software 4.x (primary), occasional 5.x late-production
Clinical positioning
- Entry-tier refurb — community hospital and outpatient imaging where 64-slice chest / abdomen-pelvis / neuro throughput is sufficient and cardiac / advanced dose-reduction are not required.
- International markets where the Performix Pro parts network and service knowledge are mature.
- Replacement for 4- / 8- / 16-slice predecessors without stepping to Revolution-generation capital.
Relationship to siblings
- vs VCT Select — Select adds optional ASiR / SnapShot Pulse licensing and slightly faster rotation.
- vs VCT XT — XT adds V-Res 40 mm detector, Volume Shuttle, licensed ASiR, and the full cardiac configuration.
- Buying base and "upgrading" to XT after the fact is almost never cheaper than purchasing an XT configured correctly at the outset — the XT tier is a matched-component bundle, not a bolt-on.
