GE LightSpeed 16
Family: LightSpeed CT family
The 16-slice CT that established multi-detector imaging as a hospital standard. Shipped 2002 through ~2010 and remains the largest refurbished CT installed base in the world — thousands of LightSpeed 16 units are still in clinical service in community hospitals, imaging centers, and oncology clinics.
Clinical positioning
Entry-to-mid-tier CT in the refurb market today. Capable of routine chest / abdomen / pelvis / head / trauma imaging; not competitive on cardiac (rotation too slow for reliable gating) or wide-volume studies. For centers that don't need 64-slice cardiac or wide-coverage oncology protocols, a well-maintained LightSpeed 16 is often the cheapest way to get a capable CT suite online.
Specs
- Slices: 16

- Generator: 53 kW class (Plus variants up to 60 kW)
- Tube: Performix Plus family (predecessor to Performix Pro on VCT)
- Software: 4.x revisions
Relationship to the LightSpeed VCT
The 16 and the VCT 64 look similar externally but are different generations:
- Chassis — different. Parts are NOT cross-compatible between LS16 and VCT.
- Tube — Performix Plus (16) vs Performix Pro (VCT); different SKUs.
- Detector — fewer rows, different module architecture.
- Rotation — slower than VCT (minimum 0.5 sec on LS16 vs 0.35 on VCT XT).
Don't plan a "16 → 64 upgrade path" as a cost-effective refresh. It's a platform replacement.
Variants shipped
- LightSpeed 16 (standard)
- LightSpeed Plus (8-slice predecessor, shared chassis family)
- LightSpeed Ultra (4-slice)
In this vault we treat LightSpeed 16 as a single System Card covering the 16-slice configurations; earlier 4/8-slice variants are separate.
Service reality
Performix Plus tube is the dominant wear item. Tube scan counters and mA·s totals are the ground-truth resale metrics. Aftermarket parts ecosystem is mature — boards, tubes, detector modules, slip-ring kits all widely available on the refurb market.
