Siemens STRATON X-ray Tube
Siemens' signature CT X-ray tube family with a liquid-metal bearing rotating anode (gallium-based alloy film) in place of conventional ball-bearing anode axles. Direct-conduction cooling through the liquid-metal path extracts anode heat at rates exceeding ball-bearing tube capabilities. Multiple generations: base STRATON (Sensation era), STRATON MX (Definition era), STRATON MX P (Force dual-source flagship). Succeeded by the Vectron on current SOMATOM go / X.cite / NAEOTOM Alpha platforms.
Fits
- SOMATOM Sensation 16
- SOMATOM Sensation 40
- SOMATOM Sensation 64
- SOMATOM Definition family
- SOMATOM Definition AS
- SOMATOM Definition Flash (dual STRATON)
- SOMATOM Force (dual STRATON MX P)
- Biograph 16 (PET/CT with STRATON CT)
- Biograph 40
- Biograph 64
- Biograph mCT
Diagnosis
- Tube-hour counter and tube-scan counter — primary wear indicators. Context matters; the Force's MX P runs at higher power than Sensation-era STRATON.
- Arcing / dose-output drift — acceptance testing catches it first.
- Bearing-related noise or thermal-conduction degradation — STRATON-specific vs ball-bearing symptoms.
Replacement
Not a field repair. Lead times historically weeks to months. Acceptance testing (dose output, kVp stability, focal-spot integrity) mandatory post-swap.
