16-slice workhorse CT from the Siemens Sensation era. Shipped globally from 2002 through the late 2000s and remains one of the most common Siemens 16-slice platforms in the secondary market. The Sensation 16 introduced the UFC (Ultra Fast Ceramic) detector to Siemens CT and laid the host-software foundation that carried forward through Sensation 40 / 64 and the later Definition family.

Clinical positioning

  • Community hospital CT — chest / abdomen / pelvis / neuro / MSK routine work. 16-slice is sufficient for the large majority of non-cardiac diagnostic CT.
  • Emergency department — trauma head, C-spine, abdomen-pelvis for trauma protocols.
  • Outpatient imaging — high-volume routine CT.
  • Not positioned for cardiac CTA — 16-slice with 0.5 sec rotation is below the threshold for coronary CTA; Sensation 64 is the cardiac-capable member of the family.

Market position and refurb reality

  • Very large global installed base — one of the most common 16-slice CT platforms in the secondary market alongside GE LightSpeed 16.
  • Entry-tier capital on the refurb market. Favored for small hospitals, community / international sites, and imaging-center replacement of older 4-slice / 8-slice CT.
  • Service ecosystem — deep; STRATON / Dura tube aftermarket is mature, UFC detector boards tradeable, syngo host well-understood.
  • Successor pathway — SOMATOM Definition AS 64 is the step-up at the Siemens-loyal site; SOMATOM go.Top is the current mid-tier equivalent in new orders.
