Toshiba Aquilion 64
Family: Toshiba Aquilion · Modality: CT
64-slice flagship of the Toshiba TSX-101A chassis. Competitor-era platform to the GE LightSpeed VCT and Siemens Sensation 64. 64-row Quantum Detector acquiring 64 × 0.5 mm simultaneous slices per rotation, MegaCool tube, SUREExposure3D dose modulation. Shipped under the Toshiba Medical Systems brand; current secondary-market branding is Canon / Toshiba legacy after the 2016 acquisition.
Architecture
- TSX-101A chassis — same physical chassis as Aquilion 16 / 32, with the 64-row Quantum Detector configuration.
- 64-row Quantum Detector, 0.5 mm detector element size — acquires 64 simultaneous 0.5 mm slices per rotation (32 mm native Z-axis coverage).
- Selectable Slice-thickness Multi-row Detector (SSMD) — the Quantum Detector produces up to 128 slices per second through detector reconfiguration and fast rotation.
- MegaCool X-ray tube — dual focal spots, 7.5 MHU anode heat capacity, 1.386 MHU/min cooling. Direct-bearing rotating-anode design (contrast Siemens STRATON's liquid-metal bearing).
- 72 cm gantry aperture — wider than the 70 cm aperture used by most competitor scanners of the era.
Imaging chain
- Shaped filters (bowtie) — dose and image-quality uniformity across the FOV.
- Quantum denoising software — noise-reduction reconstruction layer.
- SUREExposure3D — automatic tube-current modulation across the 3D patient volume.
- Boost3D — image-quality enhancement algorithm for dose-efficient imaging.

Clinical positioning
- Coronary CTA — primary cardiac use case. Competitor-era platform to LightSpeed VCT and Sensation 64 for coronary CTA workflows.
- Whole-body oncology staging — chest-abdomen-pelvis at 64-slice coverage.
- Neuro / trauma — fast whole-head and C-spine for stroke and trauma protocols.
- Peripheral vascular runoff — single-acquisition lower-extremity angio.
- 72 cm bore advantage — bariatric and interventional-adjunct workflows where the wider aperture matters.
Parts
Market position (secondary / refurb)
- Large international installed base — particularly strong in Asia-Pacific refurb channels where Toshiba's brand penetration was highest.
- Mature service ecosystem — OEM service continuing under Canon Medical; multi-vendor service established on the TSX-101A chassis.
- MegaCool tube aftermarket is developed; Quantum Detector boards tradeable.
- Successor pathway — Aquilion CX / CXL (128-slice via double-slice technology), Aquilion Prime, Aquilion ONE (320-slice premium).
Relationship to siblings
- Aquilion 16 — entry-tier sibling on the same TSX-101A chassis.
- Aquilion 32 — intermediate-tier sibling.
- Aquilion CX / CXL — 128-slice successor-class (double-slice technology).
- Aquilion Prime — mid-tier successor class with AiCE.
- Aquilion ONE — 320-slice premium sibling from a later generation.
