Toshiba / Canon MegaCool X-ray Tube
Toshiba's signature CT X-ray tube of the TSX-101A chassis era (Aquilion 16 / 32 / 64 / CX). Dual focal spots, 7.5 MHU anode heat capacity, and 1.386 MHU/min cooling rate — the Toshiba counterpart to GE's Performix Pro and Siemens' STRATON of the same mid-2000s CT era. Direct-bearing (non-liquid-metal) rotating-anode design. Now branded Canon Medical legacy after the 2016 acquisition but still widely serviced under the MegaCool nomenclature.
Fits
- Toshiba / Canon Aquilion 16
- Toshiba / Canon Aquilion 32
- Toshiba / Canon Aquilion 64
- Toshiba / Canon Aquilion CX / CXL
Specs
- Dual focal spots
- 7.5 MHU anode heat capacity
- 1.386 MHU/min cooling rate
- Rotating anode, direct bearing (not liquid-metal)
Diagnosis
- Tube scan counter and tube hour counter — primary wear indicators.
- Anode bearing noise (audible) — end-of-life warning sign.
- Arcing / dose-output drift — acceptance testing catches it first.
- Focal-spot blooming on small-field / small-object imaging.
Replacement
Not a field repair. Plan the outage. Acceptance testing (dose output, kVp stability, focal-spot integrity) mandatory post-swap. Current Canon Aquilion Prime / Lightning / Serve / ONE platforms have shifted to newer tube generations; MegaCool remains the Aquilion legacy reference tube.
