Siemens SOMATOM Emotion Family

Entry and mid-tier Siemens CT platform, shipped broadly through the 2000s and into the 2010s into community, emerging-market, small-hospital, and outpatient installations. The Emotion family addresses the end of the market where Sensation / Definition capital and siting aren't viable — smaller footprint, reduced power and cooling, economy-tier Dura-series X-ray tube, and simpler host configuration than Siemens' premium lines. Very large global installed base, especially in international markets where Siemens positioned Emotion as the volume seller.

Variants (dedicated System Cards)

  • SOMATOM Emotion 6 — 6-slice configuration; entry-tier community / emerging-market.
  • SOMATOM Emotion 16 — 16-slice configuration; the high-volume member of the family and one of the most-shipped CT platforms globally.
  • Earlier generations — Emotion 2-slice (TSX-002A era); largely out of service.

Shared platform characteristics

  • 70 cm gantry aperture — shared with the rest of the Siemens CT clinical lineup.
  • 50 cm scan field.
  • Dura-series X-ray tube — Siemens' economy-tier rotating-anode tube. Typical Emotion-16 configuration: Dura 422 MV, 5 MHU anode heat capacity, 810 kHU/min cooling. Conventional ball-bearing construction (contrast Sensation / Definition which ship with the liquid-metal-bearing STRATON).
  • UFC detector (Emotion 16) — shared scintillator technology lineage with Sensation.
  • syngo CT host — shared host-software lineage across Siemens CT portfolio.
  • CARE Dose — automatic tube-current modulation.
  • Compact footprint — Emotion 16 installations fit in as little as 18 m² total including scan room.

Market position

  • Very large international installed base. Siemens positioned Emotion 16 as the highest-shipping CT scanner in the world in its era; shipped globally into small hospitals, imaging centers, and international markets.
  • Mature service ecosystem — Dura tube aftermarket is established; syngo host well-understood by both OEM and multi-vendor service organizations.
  • Secondary-market economics — Emotion 6 and 16 represent the low-capital entry points into Siemens CT on the refurb market.
  • Successor pathway — SOMATOM go.Top is the current Siemens mid-tier in new orders; refurb Emotion 16 → refurb Sensation 16 / Definition AS is the common upgrade pathway within Siemens.

Service reality shared across the family

  • Dura tube is the primary wear item. Tube-hour and tube-scan counter define the remaining service life.
  • Chiller / cooling discipline same as other rotating-anode CT.
  • Host software — syngo CT. Application licensing is separately gated.
  • HV generator — typically 40–50 kW depending on configuration; economy-tier compared to Sensation's 80 kW.
