Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) configuration of the Dimensions platform — no tomosynthesis license. Hardware-identical to the Selenia Dimensions 3D variant; the difference is licensed software + PMA-approval bundle.
Clinical positioning
Original 2008 Dimensions configuration. 2D-only units today are typically ones that never received the tomo upgrade. Less clinically differentiated than 3D — tomo meaningfully outperforms 2D-only on cancer detection + recall rates, particularly in dense breast tissue. Sites with Dimensions 2D that handle screening volume usually evaluate tomo upgrade cost-benefit at some point.
Upgrade path to 3D
The tomo upgrade is a software + licensing event, not a hardware swap. Hologic offers the upgrade directly. Requires:
- Tomosynthesis license (PMA-tied)
- C-View synthesized-2D license (optional, reduces dose)
- Reconstruction workstation software
- Physicist re-commissioning
