Hologic 3Dimensions (Genius 3D)

Manufacturer: Hologic · Modality: Mammography

Hologic's current digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) flagship. Successor-class to the Selenia Dimensions family on a new detector generation and reconstruction stack. Sold under the Genius 3D branding that Hologic applies across its DBT portfolio. The dominant DBT platform in the US install base, paired with Hologic's narrow-angle 15° tomosynthesis arc philosophy (contrast Siemens' 50° wide-angle MAMMOMAT Revelation).

Platform highlights

  • Clarity HD detector — new-generation amorphous-selenium direct-conversion detector with 70 µm pixel reconstruction for both 2D FFDM and 3D DBT. The same 70 µm pitch Hologic uses for 2D FFDM is retained in the 3D slice reconstruction.
  • 3.7-second DBT acquisition at 70 µm on current hardware — the OEM-stated sweep time on Clarity HD.
  • C-View synthesized 2D — 2D view generated from the DBT dataset, eliminating the separate 2D exposure and halving radiation dose for the full 2D + 3D screening protocol.
  • Intelligent 2D — AI-assisted synthesized 2D that highlights regions of interest for the reader.
  • 3DQuorum — slabbed tomosynthesis reconstruction that reduces reader interpretation time by consolidating thin slices into diagnostic-quality slabs without loss of lesion conspicuity.
  • SmartCurve paddle — curved compression surface that matches breast geometry; addresses patient-comfort complaints with flat paddles while preserving compression force distribution.
  • Affirm biopsy platform — integrated upright stereotactic / tomosynthesis-guided biopsy on the same gantry.
  • Genius AI Detection — FDA-cleared AI-assisted DBT reading available as a licensed add-on.

Parts

Narrow-angle vs wide-angle DBT

Hologic's 15° narrow arc produces thin slices with less out-of-plane artifact and faster acquisition. Siemens' 50° wide arc on the MAMMOMAT Revelation produces slices with different depth resolution and artifact characteristics. The narrow-angle / wide-angle distinction is the defining philosophical split in DBT hardware design; clinical outcome data favor DBT over 2D alone on either approach, and vendor-to-vendor comparisons remain actively debated.
