GE Discovery XR656
Manufacturer: GE HealthCare · Modality: Digital Radiography
Ceiling-suspended premium digital radiography platform. Ships in four room configurations — wall-only, table-only, table + wall with a shared detector, or table + wall with dual dedicated detectors — so a hospital can match the room layout to workload. Paired with GE's FlashPad wireless flat-panel detector family. Current-generation production is Discovery XR656 Plus and Discovery XR656 HD (the HD variant uses FlashPad HD for higher-resolution output at low dose).
FlashPad detector
- Wireless, cassette-form-factor CsI scintillator over amorphous-silicon TFT readout.
- Single-panel, non-tiled construction — no inter-panel seam artifacts in the active imaging area.
- 100 µm pixel pitch, 5.0 lp/mm limiting resolution.
- DQE ~75% at 0 lp/mm — the OEM efficiency figure that drives the dose-reduction argument; higher DQE delivers equivalent image quality at lower exposure.
- FlashPad HD (on XR656 HD configurations) — higher-resolution variant for detail-rich applications.
- Durability features — fluid resistance, patented cushioning, carbon-graphite casing. Drop and handling survival is meaningful in busy ER / trauma / portable environments.
Room configurations
- Wall stand only — dedicated chest / upright room.
- Table only — dedicated table / supine room.
- Table + wall stand (shared detector) — single wireless FlashPad moves between positions; lower capital, one detector to manage.
- Table + wall stand (dual detector) — one FlashPad docked at each position; higher throughput, redundancy.
Advanced applications
- Dual Energy Subtraction — two-exposure dual-energy chest with soft-tissue / bone separation. Clinical utility for lung-nodule detection against overlying bone.
- VolumeRAD — limited-angle tomosynthesis on the DR platform. Multi-projection acquisition with reconstruction into ~1–5 mm slab thickness.
- Auto Image Paste — long-length stitched radiography for long-bone and long-spine exams; the system stitches multiple FlashPad acquisitions into a single image.
Connectivity
- Ultra-Wideband wireless link between the FlashPad and the system's receiver — coexists with hospital Wi-Fi / DICOM network without interference.
- DICOM Store / Modality Worklist / MPPS — standard DICOM workflow.
- Short exam-to-image latency — wireless FlashPad image arrival at the operator console is measured in seconds.

Clinical positioning
- High-volume general radiography — chest, abdomen, MSK, trauma.
- Emergency department — the wireless FlashPad + dedicated room configuration handles ER throughput.
- Specialty applications — dual-energy chest for lung-nodule programs; VolumeRAD where DR-platform tomosynthesis is clinically useful; Auto Image Paste for scoliosis / long-bone imaging.
- Inpatient radiography — the FlashPad ecosystem overlaps with GE's Optima XR portable systems, allowing detector portability across rooms and carts.
Relationship to siblings
- GE Optima XR656 — mid-tier sibling on the same detector ecosystem. Positioning and licensing differ; Discovery XR656 is the premium ceiling-suspended tier.
- GE Optima XR220amx — portable DR sibling; shares FlashPad wireless detector compatibility.
Parts
- FlashPad / FlashPad HD Wireless DR Detector — shared across Discovery XR656, Optima XR656, and Optima XR220amx portable DR.
