Siemens MAGNETOM Avanto 1.5T

Manufacturer: Siemens Healthineers · Modality: MRI

1.5 T MRI that succeeded the Symphony and preceded the wide-bore Aera. Shipped 2004 through ~2015. Represented the maturity of the TIM coil platform — 32 / 76-element matrix coils, iPAT parallel imaging, Dot patient-adaptive workflows.

What's different from Symphony

  • Higher gradient performance — 45 mT/m (effective), 200 T/m/s slew vs Symphony's 30 / 125. Faster EPI, better DWI, stronger research capability.
  • Tim 4G platform (late Avanto revisions) with up to 204 coil elements / 64 RF channels
  • syngo MR generation update — VB17 / VE-class. More applications, cleaner workflow.
  • Dot workflows introduced — scripted protocols that adapt to the patient.

What stayed the same vs Symphony → Avanto

  • 60 cm bore (Aera jumped to 70 cm)
  • Active shim
  • Same helium boil-off economics + cold head considerations
  • syngo MR lineage (backwards migration-friendly for centers moving up)

Specs

  • 1.5 T · 60 cm bore
  • 45 mT/m gradients, 200 T/m/s slew (effective)
  • Tim 4G coil platform
  • Up to 204 matrix coil elements
  • 8–32 RF channels depending on configuration
  • syngo MR VB17 / VE

Clinical positioning

Mid-tier 1.5 T in the current refurb market. More capable than Symphony on advanced applications (cardiac cine, DTI, spectroscopy), less modern than Aera or late-revision Ingenia/Signa Voyager. A well-equipped Avanto with a full coil set is a credible clinical 1.5 T MRI.

Service reality

Same MRI ownership economics as Symphony — helium, cold head PM, gradient cooling, RF amplifier aging. Coils wear in their own way — Body Matrix + Spine Matrix hold up well; dedicated cardiac/breast coils see higher duty cycles and more failures.
