Hologic Horizon (family)
Hologic's DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) bone-densitometry family — the dominant U.S. densitometry platform alongside GE Lunar iDXA. Successor to the Discovery / QDR-class Hologic line. Three software / configuration tiers differentiated primarily by licensed software package and add-on options, not by hardware chassis — same physical scanner, different licensing.
History
- 1990s–2000s — Hologic QDR / Delphi / Discovery DXA platforms establish the U.S. installed base.
- 2010s — Horizon family launches as the modern Hologic DXA standard.
- 2020s — continued software refinement (TBS, atypical-femur, FRAX integration); large refurb base in community ophthalmology / endocrinology / rheumatology.
Variants
- Horizon A — top tier; includes Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA), Trabecular Bone Score (TBS), full body composition.
- Horizon W — mid tier.
- Horizon Ci — entry tier.
Shared platform characteristics
- Pencil-beam + fan-beam detector acquisition geometry.
- T-scores / Z-scores referenced to Hologic normative database (NOT cross-comparable with GE Lunar — vendor lock-in for serial-comparison continuity).
- FRAX integration for 10-year fracture-risk modeling.
- VFA (vertebral fracture assessment) — lateral T4–L4 acquisition for morphometric vertebral-fracture detection.
- Atypical-femur assessment software.
- Apex acquisition / analysis software ecosystem.
Distinctive technology
- Hologic normative database — long-running clinical reference for U.S. screening and trial use.
- TBS (Trabecular Bone Score) — texture-analysis adjunct to BMD on lumbar-spine images.
- Body composition — extended whole-body fat / lean / bone analysis on Horizon A.
Market position
Top-tier in U.S. DXA installed base alongside GE Lunar iDXA. Hologic and GE Lunar between them dominate U.S. screening; Norland and Osteosys hold smaller shares. Outside the U.S., GE Lunar and Hologic split the major markets unevenly by region.
Refurb posture
- Tier (A / W / Ci) is software-licensed, not hardware — refurb deals can sometimes upgrade Ci to W / A via licensing, but vendor coordination is required.
- Software / Apex version status drives analytics-package availability.
- Manufacturer normative database — switching from Hologic to GE Lunar (or vice versa) breaks serial-comparison continuity for every patient. Practical effect: refurb deals stay vendor-consistent with the existing fleet.
