GE Senographe 2000D
Family: GE Senographe (legacy) · Modality: Mammography
GE's first digital mammography platform and one of the earliest commercially-shipped FFDM systems globally. Senographe 2000D transitioned GE from the film-based Senographe DMR era (which the 2000D shares X-ray tube lineage with) into digital mammography, using an indirect-conversion CsI(Tl) scintillator + amorphous-silicon flat-panel detector. Shipped from the early 2000s through roughly 2008 before the Senographe DS succeeded it with improved detector electronics.
Platform highlights
- Indirect-conversion detector — CsI(Tl) scintillator coupled with an amorphous-silicon (a-Si) flat-panel. Light-based conversion (X-ray → light → electrical signal) in contrast to Hologic's direct-conversion a-Se approach.
- 100 µm pixel pitch — broader than the 70 µm pitch used on Hologic and current Senographe Essential / Pristina platforms.
- Smaller field of view than later GE mammography — a meaningful clinical limitation for larger breasts.
- Senographe DMR X-ray tube (dual-track Mo/Rh) — shared lineage with the analog Senographe DMR film-based mammography system; Mo target for fatty breasts, Rh target for denser breasts.
- Lower DQE / higher NNPS compared to successor platforms — electronics generation pre-dates the noise-optimization improvements of Senographe DS and Essential.

Clinical positioning
- Historical FFDM deployment. The 2000D was one of the earliest FFDM systems in clinical service; its role today is primarily legacy continuation at sites that haven't yet transitioned to current-generation mammography.
- Screening and diagnostic mammography — standard 2D FFDM workflow.
- Not DBT-capable — tomosynthesis arrived with later platforms (first Hologic, then other OEMs).
- Limited by detector electronics generation — later Senographe DS / Essential platforms deliver better DQE at lower dose.
Market position (secondary / refurb)
- Declining refurb volume. Senographe 2000D is among the oldest FFDM platforms still in occasional service; many installations have been replaced with Essential / Pristina or competitor DBT platforms.
- Service ecosystem — GE OEM service still available but parts supply narrows year over year; multi-vendor service familiar with the platform.
- Successor pathway — Senographe DS → Senographe Essential → Senographe Pristina (current).
Relationship to siblings and successors
- Senographe DMR — analog film-based predecessor to 2000D; 2000D shares the tube.
- Senographe DS — direct digital successor with improved detector electronics.
- Senographe Essential — successor-class with extended-area detector.
- Senographe Pristina — current GE mammography flagship.
