Siemens Mammomat Novation DR

Family: Siemens Mammomat · Modality: Mammography

Siemens' first full-field digital mammography (FFDM) platform. Combined the ergonomic C-arm chassis of the earlier analog Mammomat 3000 Nova with an amorphous-selenium direct-conversion digital detector, bridging Siemens from film-based mammography into digital. Shipped through the mid-to-late 2000s before the Mammomat Inspiration succeeded it with a field-upgradable tomosynthesis path on later production units.

Platform highlights

  • Amorphous-selenium (a-Se) direct-conversion detector — same detector technology class used across the Siemens Mammomat Inspiration / Revelation lineage that followed. Direct conversion eliminates the light-diffusion blur of indirect-conversion (CsI + a-Si) competitor platforms of the era.
  • 24 × 29 cm detector with 2400 × 2900 pixel matrix.
  • 70 µm pixel pitch — the Siemens Mammomat pixel-pitch standard that carried forward to Inspiration / Revelation.
  • Tungsten (W) target X-ray tube — Siemens committed to tungsten early. Tungsten's harder beam reduces dose at matched image quality vs molybdenum targets, supporting Siemens' up-to-~50% dose-reduction positioning vs analog film mammography.
  • Digital 4:1 grid — anti-scatter grid integrated into the imaging workflow (PRIME workflow software that removes the physical grid in post-processing arrived later with Inspiration).
  • Mammomat 3000 Nova heritage — the C-arm, compression, and patient-positioning design inherited from the analog predecessor. Clinical workflow familiar to technologists trained on the analog system.

Specs

  • 24 × 29 cm a-Se direct-conversion detector
  • 2400 × 2900 pixel matrix · 70 µm pixel pitch
  • Tungsten (W) target X-ray tube
  • Digital 4:1 anti-scatter grid
  • 2D FFDM only (no tomosynthesis)
  • MQSA-accreditable (MQSA)

Clinical positioning

  • Screening mammography — 2D FFDM workflow through the late 2000s.
  • Diagnostic mammography — spot compression, magnification views, additional projections.
  • Siemens-loyal hospital mammography — sites that had operated Mammomat 3000 Nova analog systems for years transitioned to Novation DR with familiar ergonomics.
  • Not DBT-capable — tomosynthesis on Siemens mammography arrived with late-production Mammomat Inspiration (field-upgradable DBT) and standard on Mammomat Revelation (50° wide-angle DBT).

Market position (secondary / refurb)

  • Moderate global install base. Siemens mammography market share is below Hologic and GE, so Novation DR refurb volumes are lower than Selenia / Senographe DS — but meaningful, especially in European and international channels where Siemens is a stronger mammography brand.
  • Service ecosystem — Siemens OEM service continues; multi-vendor mammography service familiar with the a-Se detector family shared across Mammomat Novation / Inspiration / Fusion / Revelation.
  • Successor pathwayMammomat Inspiration (field-upgradable DBT) → Mammomat Revelation (current wide-angle DBT flagship).

Relationship to siblings and successors

  • Mammomat 3000 Nova — analog film predecessor. Novation DR shares chassis ergonomics.
  • Mammomat Inspiration — direct successor with tomosynthesis upgrade path on late production.
  • Mammomat Fusion — current 2D-only entry-tier sibling.
  • Mammomat Revelation — current 50° wide-angle DBT flagship.
