GE Discovery IQ PET/CT

Manufacturer: GE HealthCare · Modality: PET/CT

Entry and mid-tier PET/CT in GE's molecular-imaging line. Distinct from the Discovery MI digital platform: Discovery IQ uses conventional BGO (bismuth germanate) scintillator with photomultiplier-tube readout, positioned for community oncology, general NM, and international markets where Discovery MI's capital and siting are out of scope. Configurable in 3-, 4-, or 5-ring geometries — the customer chooses sensitivity per clinical need and budget.

Detector architecture

  • BGO crystals — 6.3 × 6.3 × 30 mm, arranged in an 8 × 8 matrix per block. BGO has high stopping power (dense, high-Z) and is the scintillator of choice when ToF is not the primary metric.
  • LightBurst detector unit — 5 detector blocks per ring position in the axial direction.
  • Ring diameter — 74 cm.
  • Detector units per ring — 36, for a total of 720 photomultiplier tubes across the full detector ring in the 5-ring configuration.
  • No ToF — Discovery IQ is an energy-integrating BGO system without Time-of-Flight localization. ToF-capable GE platforms are the Discovery MI and current Omni / MI-class systems.

Ring configurations

Configuration Axial FOV Typical use
D-IQ-3 ~15 cm General NM, low-volume PET
D-IQ-4 ~20 cm Mid-volume oncology
D-IQ-5 ~26 cm High-throughput whole-body oncology

Five-ring D-IQ-5 gives 79 image planes at 3.27 mm plane spacing — the same whole-body FOV class as digital PET/CT competitors at a different economic tier.

Reconstruction

  • Q.Clear — Bayesian penalized-likelihood reconstruction. Reduces image noise while preserving small-lesion conspicuity; widely cited as a GE clinical differentiator across Discovery IQ and MI.
  • PSF modeling — point-spread-function modeling integrated in the reconstruction pipeline.
  • SharpIR — iterative reconstruction variant for specific oncology / quantitative protocols.

Energy and coincidence

  • Coincidence window: 9.5 ns.
  • Energy thresholds: 425–650 keV (standard oncology FDG).

Clinical positioning

  • Community oncology PET/CT — FDG staging, restaging, treatment-response imaging at lower capital than digital PET.
  • International / emerging markets — service and siting economics favor the BGO-PMT platform over digital SiPM class.
  • Cardiac rubidium — compatible with Rb-82 generator workflows.
  • Theranostic imaging — ⁶⁸Ga-DOTATATE, ¹⁷⁷Lu post-therapy imaging where available.
