i-CAT (KaVo Imaging Sciences)
U.S. dental-imaging brand — best known for i-CAT FLX dental cone-beam CT, a U.S.-engineered platform that established a meaningful niche in oral surgery, orthodontic, and implant-focused practices. i-CAT originated at Imaging Sciences International (ISI), passed through Sirona / Danaher / KaVo Kerr corporate-ownership transitions, and currently sits within Envista Holdings' KaVo Kerr dental portfolio.
Company history
- 2002 — Imaging Sciences International (ISI) launches i-CAT, an early commercial dental CBCT.
- 2007 — i-CAT acquired by Sirona Dental Systems briefly, then resold to Danaher / KaVo group.
- 2010s — i-CAT FLX and FLX V-Series establish strong U.S. oral-surgery and orthodontic installed base.
- 2019 — Envista Holdings spun out from Danaher with KaVo Kerr (and i-CAT) inside.
- 2020s — i-CAT FLX continues; integration with KaVo Kerr broader dental portfolio.
Product line
- i-CAT FLX V-Series — current flagship CBCT (V8 / V10 / V17 FOV configurations).
- i-CAT FLX MV — mid-volume tier.
- i-CAT 17-19 — predecessor large-FOV configuration.
Distinctive technology
- Adjustable FOV — 16×6 to 23×17 cm spans on top configuration; flexible single-chassis coverage from single-tooth endo through full-skull orthognathic.
- Vision Q workstation — vendor-native viewing + planning ecosystem.
- Tx STUDIO — implant + orthognathic + airway planning workflow integration with third-party software.
- DICOM export — workable integration with coDiagnostiX, NobelClinician, etc.
Market position
Niche but durable in U.S. oral-surgery and orthodontic practices. Smaller global footprint than Planmeca / Dentsply Sirona / Vatech but loyal U.S. specialty user base.
Refurb posture
- Established refurb supply — i-CAT FLX turnover in U.S. specialty-dental upgrades.
- Software / Vision Q version drives clinical capability.
- DICOM export verification is a refurb-deal variable.
