Dentsply Sirona
One of the two dominant global dental imaging and equipment manufacturers (alongside Planmeca). The 2016 Dentsply + Sirona merger combined the world's largest dental-consumables maker (Dentsply — crowns, implants, endodontic instruments, orthodontic appliances) with Sirona's dental imaging, treatment centers, and chairside CAD / CAM. Publicly traded on NASDAQ under XRAY.
Company history
- 1877 — Reiniger, Gebbert & Schall founded — the Siemens-lineage imaging company that eventually becomes Sirona.
- 1997 — Siemens spins off its dental division as Sirona Dental Systems.
- 2006–2016 — Sirona builds the Orthophos / Galileos imaging line and CEREC chairside CAD / CAM franchise as separate publicly listed company.
- 2016 — Dentsply + Sirona merge to form Dentsply Sirona (NASDAQ: XRAY).
- 2020s — Axeos imaging refresh (current-generation pan / ceph / CBCT), Primescan intraoral scanner, SureSmile clear-aligner workflow, Primemill / Primemill Pro chairside mills.
Product line
Imaging
- Orthophos family — pan / ceph / CBCT (S and SL tiers), large legacy installed base.
- Axeos — current-generation pan / ceph / CBCT with patient-positioning automation.
- Galileos / Galileos Comfort Plus — predecessor CBCT family, still in service in many practices.
- Schick / SchickAI — intraoral sensors and 2D digital X-ray.
- Heliodent / Heliodent Plus — intraoral X-ray heads.
CAD / CAM
- CEREC — the category-defining chairside dental CAD / CAM platform, enabling same-visit crowns. Category-dominant since the late 1990s.
- Primescan intraoral scanner; Primemill / Primemill Pro chairside mill; Primeprint 3D printing for surgical guides and aligners.
Treatment centers + chairs
- Teneo, Intego, Sinius treatment centers; integrated dental chairs with Sirona-imaging ecosystem.
Consumables (Dentsply heritage)
- Implant systems — Astra Tech, Ankylos, Xive, Atlantis abutments.
- Endodontic instruments — ProTaper Gold / Ultimate, WaveOne Gold.
- Crown / restorative materials, orthodontic appliances (SureSmile clear aligners).
Distinctive technology
- CEREC — the chairside CAD / CAM that enables same-visit crowns. Category-dominant since the 1990s; Primescan + Primemill is the current generation.
- Integrated imaging + CAD / CAM + implant + ortho workflow — CBCT → SICAT planning → SureSmile aligners or implant surgical guide → CEREC mill or 3D print. Vertically integrated from imaging through restoration in a way no other dental OEM matches at this breadth.
- SICAT planning software ecosystem — implant, orthognathic, sleep / airway, endo planning on Orthophos / Axeos data.
- CEPHALOS / SmartPan automated 2D pan workflow on imaging units.
Market position
- Dental consumables: top-tier globally (via Dentsply heritage).
- Dental imaging: co-leader with Planmeca.
- Chairside CAD / CAM: category-dominant via CEREC.
- Implant systems: top-tier globally; Astra Tech and Ankylos are recognized premium-tier brands.
- Clear aligners: top alternative to Align Technology's Invisalign in the orthodontic market.
Refurb posture
- Orthophos refurb supply is large; SL versus S tier and software-version status are price-determining variables.
- CEREC chairside fleet turns over on a different cycle than imaging — shorter useful life driven by software / mill compatibility, not detector aging.
- DICOM export hygiene is the practical workflow concern for cross-platform planning-software compatibility.
- Dental-equipment service network is dental-specific; cross-pollination from medical-imaging service ecosystems is limited.
