Varian TrueBeam Launch (2010)
2010 — Varian TrueBeam launches, succeeding the Clinac iX lineage as Varian's flagship linear accelerator. The platform refresh combines a digital control chassis with high-dose-rate flattening-filter-free (FFF) beams (up to 2400 MU/min on FFF energies), high-resolution imaging, and the foundation for a new generation of SRS / SBRT / HyperArc clinical programs.
What changed from Clinac iX
- Digital control architecture — replaced the iX's analog backbone. Richer fault logging, faster control loops, and a software-driven workflow that supported subsequent feature releases (Calypso integration, SRS package evolution, HyperArc).
- FFF beams at clinical scale — 6 MV FFF and 10 MV FFF energies enable single-fraction SRS and short-fraction SBRT delivery without the dose-rate ceiling of flattened beams.
- Imaging chain — kV / kV CBCT (OBI) with sub-mm setup accuracy as a baseline; MV portal imaging retained for backup and verification.
- Maestro control system — different console generation than iX; clinical workflow refreshed.
- Frameless cranial SRS at clinical quality on the C-arm linac platform — work that defined the subsequent TrueBeam STx / Edge product positioning.
Adjacent product line
The TrueBeam launch anchored a Varian portfolio refresh that defined the current generation:
- TrueBeam (2010) — flagship.
- TrueBeam STx (2012) — SRS-focused variant with HD120 MLC (2.5 mm central leaves) and PerfectPitch 6 DoF couch.
- Edge (2014) — dedicated SRS platform sharing TrueBeam STx genes.
- Halcyon (2017) — ring-gantry conventional-RT platform; faster IMRT throughput at simplified workflow.
- Ethos (2020) — adaptive-RT-on-Halcyon platform with on-table re-planning.
Clinical impact
- VMAT throughput — RapidArc + FFF cuts per-fraction delivery time, raising daily patient volume on the same machine.
- SRS / SBRT — frameless cranial SRS, lung / liver / spine SBRT become routine on the platform.
- HyperArc — non-coplanar cranial multi-target SRS workflow built on TrueBeam imaging chain and couch-rotation accuracy.
- Adaptive workflows — on-rails CT-based and (via Ethos / Halcyon) on-table image-based adaptive techniques mature on the same control architecture.
