Varex Imaging
Component supplier to imaging OEMs — X-ray tubes, flat-panel detectors, high-voltage connectors, and image-processing software. Spun out of Varian Medical Systems in 2017 as an independent public company so Varian could focus on radiation oncology while the imaging-component business operated as a multi-OEM supplier without channel conflict. Varex now sits behind a substantial fraction of the third-party / OEM-rebranded imaging-component ecosystem — its detectors and tubes appear under multiple brand names because Varex sells to OEMs at the component level rather than direct to clinical sites.
The two principal product lines are PaxScan (flat-panel detectors, broadest deployment of any single detector family across CT, DR, cath / fluoro, security, and industrial NDT) and the MCS / G-series / B-series tubes for CT, DR, mammography, and dental imaging. PaxScan in particular has the deepest cross-platform compatibility of any detector platform because Varex's go-to-market is component sales — an OEM can specify a Varex panel without locking into a single integrated stack.
For refurb / parts buyers this matters: Varex panels and tubes flow through the secondary market more freely than vertically-integrated equivalents (e.g., Trixell Pixium under JV-OEM control, or in-house Canon panels), and parts compatibility across nominally-different OEM platforms exists where the underlying Varex SKU matches.
Product line
- PaxScan flat-panel detectors — multiple sizes (2520 / 3030 / 4343 / 4030) and pixel pitches across CT, DR, cath / fluoro, mobile DR, dental, industrial.
- CT X-ray tubes — MCS / G-series, used by multiple CT OEMs as second-source or primary tube on certain platforms.
- DR / mammography / dental tubes — broad portfolio.
- HV connectors / image-processing modules — component-level offerings.
Distinctive technology
- Multi-customer component supply — same detector / tube SKUs appear across multiple OEM-branded systems.
- PaxScan dynamic mode — high-frame-rate readout for fluoroscopy / cine.
- Pixel-pitch and scintillator options — CsI / Gadox depending on dose / image-quality target.
Market position
- Largest independent imaging-component supplier globally.
- Multi-OEM strategy — supplies competitors of one another with the same components.
- Aftermarket and refurb-supply leverage substantial.
- Direct competitor: Trixell (JV-locked alternative), in-house OEM detector / tube programs.
Refurb posture
- Strong aftermarket supply of PaxScan panels and Varex tubes.
- Cross-platform compatibility at the component level — same panel SKU across multiple OEM systems.
- Service-network depth for Varex components is meaningful given the component-supply business model.
