magnetron
Simpler RF source than the klystron — a self-oscillating microwave generator that produces the RF energy for the linac waveguide. Used on lower-energy, single-energy linacs and on selected entry-tier modern platforms; not used on dual-energy or high-power radiosurgery configurations.
Why it matters to buyers: Cheaper than klystron, still a scheduled-wear consumable. Refurb economics on magnetron-based linacs are friendlier than klystron-based — both as initial purchase and as ongoing parts cost.
Why it matters to engineers: 6 MV single-energy Clinac iX configurations typically use magnetron; dual-energy Clinac iX and TrueBeam configurations use klystron. End-of-life signals are similar to klystron (output drift, arcing) but the failure modes are distinct — magnetrons don't have the same downstream-collateral-damage risk profile.
