Germanium-68 rod source used for PET daily QC and normalization calibration. Half-life ~271 days. Decays to Ga-68 (positron-emitting daughter), making it a stable in-system positron source for calibration without injecting tracer.

Why it matters to engineers: Discovery 690 and other modern PET / CTs automate rod load / store; still need physical source management — chain of custody, decay-in-storage prior to disposal.
