Selenia Dimensions — Engineer Field Guide

The detector is the whole game
a-Se flat panels age. 5–9 year useful life on panels manufactured 2009 or later; 3 years on earlier panels. A 2015 Dimensions with a 2019 detector replacement is worth much more than a 2017 Dimensions with its original panel.
- Verify detector serial and install date in service logs before purchase.
- Ghosting, dead pixel clusters, and lag artifacts are end-of-life signals.
Top failure patterns
- Detector artifacts → recalibration buys time; full replacement is the real fix.
- Tomo reconstruction artifacts → tube-head positional accuracy or software; phantom test first.
- Cracked or flexing compression paddles → immediate physicist fail. Keep spares.
- Sun Ultra 45 workstation failures → legacy hardware. Drive image backups are mandatory.
- Acquisition monitor brightness drift → recalibrate quarterly.
MQSA playbook
Every clinical unit must be MQSA-accredited. Annual physicist testing is non-negotiable.
- Budget ~1 day of downtime per year for the physicist.
- Failing tests take the unit out of service until remediated. Plan for it.
- Paddle inventory is a hidden MQSA line item — a cracked paddle mid-testing fails the whole survey.
Licensing
3D tomo license and C-View license are separate software entitlements. Confirm both in writing on any refurb deal.
Accepting a refurbished Dimensions
- Detector install date + model number
- Tomo license present + currently activated
- C-View license present (if quoted)
- Full paddle set + physicist phantom included
- Last MQSA inspection report
- Workstation drive imaged; spare Sun Ultra 45 identified
- Acquisition + review monitor calibration reports
- DICOM storage + worklist test
- Biopsy attachment (Affirm) if quoted
